Application

CRA executed the engineering, manufacturing, and supply of bi-directional biogas flame arrestors for Saudi Aramco–linked wastewater and biogas infrastructure projects, executed through VA Tech Wabag. The flame arrestors were designed to provide absolute flame propagation protection for biogas handling systems operating under variable compositions and low-pressure conditions. The solution ensured full compliance with international safety standards while maintaining long-term operational reliability in critical oil & gas–linked utility installations.

The Challenge

Ensuring Flame Safety in Large-Scale Biogas Networks

VA Tech Wabag required flame arrestors capable of protecting upstream biogas systems connected to large-scale utility and oil & gas–linked infrastructure projects for Saudi Aramco. The key challenges included:

• Preventing flame flashback under both normal and upset operating conditions
• Handling biogas with variable methane concentration and trace H₂S
• Maintaining low pressure drop across large-diameter pipelines
• Ensuring long-term reliability in continuous-duty applications
• Compliance with stringent international safety standards

The flame arrestors had to function reliably across a wide range of flow rates while ensuring zero compromise on safety.

Our Solution

Engineered Bi-Directional Flame Arrestors for Critical Biogas Safety

CRA designed and manufactured high-performance biogas flame arrestors engineered specifically for industrial-scale gas handling systems. The solution emphasized safety, robustness, and minimal process impact.

Engineering & Design

Flame arrestor engineering optimized for biogas composition, low pressure drops, and ISO-compliant flame quenching performance

• Optimized flame quenching element geometry to arrest flame fronts effectively
• Bi-directional design enabling protection from both upstream and downstream ignition sources
• Low pressure-drop flow path to preserve system efficiency
• Design validated for methane-rich biogas with CO₂ dilution and trace H₂S
• Compliance with ISO 16852 flame arrestor performance criteria

The design ensures reliable flame extinction while maintaining stable operation under fluctuating gas flow and composition.

Manufacturing & Quality Assurance

Precision manufacturing with rigorous QA/QC controls to ensure safety, reliability, and full documentation compliance

• Precision fabrication of flame arrestor bodies and quenching elements
• Material selection compatible with corrosive biogas environments
• Dimensional and quality inspections at every manufacturing stage
• Documentation package including design calculations, drawings, QA/QC records, and operating manuals
• Full traceability aligned with oil & gas project documentation requirements

CRA’s in-house manufacturing ensured tight quality control and schedule adherence.

Results

Reliable Flame Protection for High-Criticality Biogas Systems

• Complete prevention of flame propagation and flashback
• Stable performance across varying gas compositions and flow conditions
• Minimal pressure loss across the flame arrestor assembly
• Compliance with international safety and process standards
• High confidence deployment for Saudi Aramco–linked infrastructure

Conclusion

Delivering standards-compliant flame safety solutions for Saudi Aramco–linked biogas infrastructure

This project demonstrates CRA’s capability to engineer and deliver safety-critical flame arrestor solutions for complex biogas applications connected to oil & gas infrastructure. By combining standards-compliant design, robust manufacturing, and comprehensive documentation, CRA provided VA Tech Wabag with a reliable and scalable solution tailored for Saudi Aramco project requirements. The case reinforces CRA’s expertise in flame safety equipment for biogas, utilities, and high-integrity industrial gas systems.
