CRA executed the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, and commissioning support of a Biological Gas Scrubber System for the treatment of biogas generated at a municipal wastewater treatment facility. The system was engineered to achieve effective removal of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), odorous compounds, and corrosive contaminants under normal, upset, and peak operating conditions, while complying with applicable environmental and safety regulations. The fully automated scrubber ensures stable outlet gas quality, minimizes odor emissions, and protects downstream equipment from corrosion, supporting reliable and sustainable wastewater treatment operations.

The Challenge

Ensuring Reliable Odor and H₂S Control for Municipal Biogas Streams

The wastewater treatment facility required a gas treatment system capable of handling biogas containing hydrogen Sulphide and odor-causing compounds that pose corrosion, safety, and environmental risks. The primary challenges included:

  • Effective H₂S and odor removal under low-pressure biogas conditions
  • Variable gas flow and composition typical of sewage digestion processes
  • Requirement for stable, continuous operation with minimal manual intervention
  • Protection of downstream piping and equipment from corrosive attack
  • Compliance with municipal and environmental emission standards

The system needed to deliver consistent biological treatment performance while maintaining operational simplicity and long service life.

Our Solution

Biological Gas Scrubber with Optimized Media and Automated Control

CRA engineered and supplied a biological gas scrubber system designed to achieve high removal efficiency through optimized gas–liquid contact, controlled biological activity, and robust mechanical design.

Engineering, Design, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance

  • Scrubber column designed for 590 m³/hr biogas flow with optimized packing media
  • Biological treatment process engineered for effective H₂S and odor removal
  • Design optimized for low inlet pressure operation at 20 mbar(g)
  • Automated control system ensuring stable biological activity and safety interlocks
  • Corrosion-resistant construction for long-term service life
  • In-house fabrication with quality checks across mechanical, piping, and instrumentation systems
Results and Performance Outcome

Demonstrated Performance and Operational Reliability

The Biological Gas Scrubber system delivered stable and efficient removal of hydrogen sulfide and odorous compounds under low-pressure operating conditions, ensuring consistent gas quality and environmental compliance across variable wastewater treatment loads.

  • Effective biological removal of H₂S and odour-causing compounds
  • Stable operation under fluctuating biogas flow and composition
  • Low-pressure performance maintained at 20 mbar(g) inlet conditions
  • Reduced corrosion risk to downstream piping and equipment
  • Automated operation with minimal operator intervention
  • Improved environmental and odour compliance at the treatment facility
