Type

CRA was awarded the design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and supply of a complete biogas H2S scrubber with activated-media polishing for the MCGM Dharavi 418 MLD sewage treatment plant in Mumbai. The system reduces H2S from around 10,000 ppm to below 100 ppm using a chemical scrubber, regenerative stage, and activated-media polishing, protecting downstream equipment and improving gas quality for continuous municipal service.

The Challenge

High-Capacity H2S Removal for a 418 MLD Municipal STP

The Dharavi STP required a biogas treatment system capable of handling raw digester gas at very high inlet H2S concentration while holding consistent gas quality for continuous municipal service. Key constraints included:

  • Inlet H2S concentration of around 10,000 ppm requiring deep, reliable removal
  • A target outlet concentration below 100 ppm to protect downstream equipment
  • Continuous-duty operation at 418 MLD, one of the largest single sewage treatment capacities in CRA’s biogas scrubber project record
  • Full sampling, isolation, and control integration for municipal operating and reporting requirements

Our Solution

Chemical Scrubbing, Regeneration, and Activated-Media Polishing in One Package

CRA designed and supplied a complete H2S scrubbing package combining three stages of treatment for deep, reliable removal.

Core Components Delivered:

  • Chemical scrubber stage sized for bulk H2S removal from the raw digester gas
  • Regenerative stage supporting stable, continuous scrubbing performance
  • Activated-media polishing stage for low H2S slip ahead of downstream equipment
  • Twin-lobe feed blowers rated at 1,275 Nm³/h
  • Sampling systems, isolation valves, and full control integration

The package was engineered specifically for continuous-duty municipal service with low H2S slip.

Results

H2S Reduced from 10,000 ppm to Below 100 ppm in Commissioned Service

The system is commissioned and reduces H2S from around 10,000 ppm to below 100 ppm across the chemical scrubbing, regenerative, and activated-media polishing stages. The twin-lobe feed blowers hold rated flow at 1,275 Nm³/h, and full sampling and isolation integration supports continuous municipal operation with low H2S slip to downstream equipment.

Conclusion

Deep H2S Removal at Municipal Scale

This project demonstrates CRA’s capability to deliver multi-stage H2S scrubbing systems combining chemical, regenerative, and activated-media polishing treatment for large-scale municipal biogas applications, holding H2S well below 100 ppm at the outlet even from a 10,000 ppm inlet stream.
